How To Trap Racoon? – Aminal Fun

The raccoon is a beautiful creature. I believe it is very popular with everyone. So how do you trap them?

Five Step To Trap Racoon

1. Trap Placement

Be sure to check the local regulations in your area regarding the capture of raccoons or any other small animals before setting up any raccoon traps. Raccoons have been known to build dens and shelter in a variety of places, including chimneys, attics, walls, and tree hollows in your yard. Decide where to set your live trap based on the raccoon activity you have observed there. Better results can be obtained by placing several traps along their routes.

2. Baiting The Raccoon Trap

You can use a variety of baits to entice raccoons into your trap. Despite the fact that raccoons will consume almost anything, it is best to avoid using meat as bait because it makes it easier for non-target animals, such as cats, to fall into your trap. Bread or marshmallows can be used as an alternative food as bait. Commercial baits are also available and can be used in conjunction with other conventional bait.

3. Setting The Trap

Because they are highly intelligent and have excellent memories, raccoons may be wary of traps. Try tying the trap open and leaving the bait inside for a few days before setting it to get them accustomed to the trap. Put the door(s) in the open position with caution. The instructions specific to your trap must be followed as each trap sets up differently. Once everything is in place, test the trigger and close the mechanism by depressing the trigger plate. All raccoon traps should be firmly anchored to a solid surface.

4. Check The Trap

Raccoon trapping can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few days, so it’s critical to check on your trap frequently. Check the traps in the morning because raccoons are nocturnal creatures. Handling the trap after a raccoon is caught requires caution to prevent bites. Before moving the trap for release, cover it with a blanket to calm the raccoon. Relocating raccoons in public places might be against local and state laws. For advice on raccoon relocation and disposal, contact a pest control expert or your local DNR/wildlife officials. Never keep a trapped animal in a cage for a long time.

5. Keep Raccoons Away

The likelihood is high that raccoons are entering your property in search of shelter, food, and water. After the raccoons are gone, keep them out by taking the following actions:

  • Eliminate food and water sources
  • Remove trash or material that can be used as a den
  • Secure the lid on any garbage receptacles
  • Remove tree branches or shrubbery that extends near rooflines
  • Cover potential building access points

Check Trap Often

A trapped raccoon may become frightened and uneasy very quickly. Regularly checking on your trap is crucial. Catching a raccoon could take anywhere from a few minutes to a few days. No matter what, never keep an animal trapped for a long time.

Remove Attractants

Your property is invaded by raccoons looking for food, water, and shelter. Following the raccoon’s removal, keep them out by taking the following actions:

  • eliminating food/water sources
  • removing trash
  • washing garbage cans
  • closing gate/fence gaps
  • fixing broken vents/screens
  • closing windows

Although we can catch raccoons, we must also take good care of the wildlife around us in our daily life.
